It’s wild to think that the same handful of social media platforms that I grew up alongside of are still the same set of centralized companies that exist today. Not only are they dangerous (re: Cambridge Analytica) but they are also authoritarian to the very content creators upon which the success of their platforms was built. [read more on creator pain-points here]. Creators don’t own their followers and are limited to the community-building tools found within the walls of these apps. The rise of the creator economy has seen multiple investments made into helping content creators make content as well as run and automate the ops of their solo-entrepreneurial businesses. Less money and attention has gone towards helping these creators/solo-preneurs be less reliant and at the whim of social media platforms by introducing new ways to allow for them to be discovered by new users (re: followers), communicate with them in a communication channel instead of comment section or DM, and cultivate a community that ultimately self-organizes and continues to be mined for additional revenue generating opportunities.

With record low returns on SEO investment, which was once the main vehicle for solo-preneurs to be discovered, creators and subject matter experts are now using social media platforms as free top of funnel marketing channels to acquire new customers.
